Welcoming to dogs, Ramapo Mountain State Forest in New Jersey offers a vast network of trails to explore. Known as a wildlife sanctuary, the park attracts birdwatchers and nature lovers to its waterways for the diverse range of birds and animal life who call the park home. The park remains open daily from sunrise to sunset.

One good route to explore, the Wanaque Ridge Trail, consists of a 7.2-mile moderate hike to the lake. For a slightly shorter hike, you can choose not to make the slight detour to see the tower ruins and Van Slyke Castle, also sometimes known as Foxcroft Mansion.

The Wanaque Ridge Trail features spectacular views of the area from the top of the ridge as well as some forested sections looping around Ramapo Lake. Although swimming is not permitted in the 120-acre lake, it offers excellent opportunities for bird-watching and fishing.
